What schools can do to promote nonviolent conflict resolution
and democracy
- Teach students to resolve conflicts through negotiation
or mediation
- Teach a comprehensive set of lessons or integrated units
dealing with conflict resolution education (one which includes
social and emotional competency, social justice and law
related education)
- Practice strategies that build a caring and democratic
classroom community, including gatherings, class meetings,
- Adopt no put down, no bullying and no violence policies
with the help of students
- Reduce or eliminate punishment as a discipline policy
and adopt positive and restorative measures to deal with
discipline and wrongdoing
- Teach students to stand up against prejudice, bullying
behaviors including teasing and harassment.
- Provide all new teachers with training in conflict mediation
and social and emotional learning strategies
- Provide staff with training and group discussion in conflict
mediation skills and concepts at least once a year, either
through an in-service or a group reading of a book

Require all teachers or teaching teams to demonstrate
yearly how they are infusing or integrating nonviolent conflict
resolution practices into their classroom curriculum and/or
culture
- Review the school safety plan and school discipline policy
for its ability to use student-initiated problem solving,
non-punitive discipline, and restorative measures to deal
with safety and wrongdoing
