Question: What do School Administrators Want?
Answer: Effective Teachers
Effective Teaching Means…
- You can explain the district and school’s grade level’s curriculum.
- You can be flexible and adaptable.
- You listen, listen, and listen.
- You know how to handle difficult parents.
- You can manage emotions.
- You can establish and maintain boundaries.
- You can create an effective classroom environment.
Research indicates these factors can help teachers become more effective and help develop a positive working relationship with administrators and students.
- Classroom Organization: Establish a well-managed classroom, where students feel good about themselves, teachers, school and their work, which result in higher academic performance.
- Time Management: Understand this is a shared responsibility. Managing your time well will decrease stress, fight burnout and make your Principal’s job easier. Administrators, allow enough planning for your teachers to help manage time.
- Develop a Productive School Climate: Whenever possible, foster positive student to teacher relationships to promote a safe and respectful climate. Doing so will support the character program your Principal has selected for improving school climate.
- Behavior Management: Effective teachers become skilled in behavior management to minimize harmful effects of misconduct and keep students learning in the classroom.
- Remediation of Misconduct: Effective teachers are willing to take extra steps to change student behavior to better understand student needs to perform well.
- Instructional Planning: Plan thoroughly and practice active student learning to minimize student misconduct, which will result in fewer office referrals from your classroom.
- Delivery of Instructions & Subject Matter: Effective teacher instruction contributes to efficient use of time and leads to better class management.
- Evaluation: Process on an ongoing basis what works best with students and parents and share that information with colleagues.
